Cabbagetown: Refacing a victorian Brick facade

This is the sandblasted brick facade before any work

The project

It was in the Spring of 2023 that we completed the removal of the scaffold for our comprehensive facade dismantling and reconstruction project in Cabbagetown. The wall had undergone accelerated deterioration due to sandblasting performed decades ago. Opting for brick replacement and repointing wouldn’t have achieved the desired aesthetic for our client, given the extensive damage. Dealing with a single wythe facade posed limitations on the number of bricks we could replace before necessitating a complete overhaul. Additionally, finding new bricks with a matching sandblasted texture proved challenging.

The process

From the accompanying images, it’s evident that the facade comprises a single wythe of brick with wood sheathing behind it, known as balloon framing. During the dismantling process, we salvaged 500 old bricks, incorporating them into the rebuild. The back of the reclaimed bricks was utilized, seamlessly integrated with new bricks sourced from Belgium. The new bricks are slightly shorter (10mm) in length than the old ones. Maintaining the original footprint required us to adjust our brick-laying pattern to ensure uniform perpendicular joints.

The old stone lintels are reinstalled above the windows

To adhere to heritage standards, we used lime mortar in the reconstruction, meticulously recreating all details. Notably, 160 squint bricks and 28 plinth bricks were custom cut and installed on-site. Stone lintels were honed to perfection. In the next phase, Heritage Homepainting will install new millwork at the gable and address any issues with the wood sills.
