The Project
We built some Interior brick feature walls for Tricon Residential in their new corporate head office in Yorkville, Toronto. After laying up the brick we applied two coats of traditional hot lime wash. The pictures of the lime washed walls were taken on the day it was applied. The finished look is more opaque. We used quicklime and water for the lime wash. The brick we used were heritage style brick to match with the exterior brickwork.
In order to prep the walls for the lime wash application we soaked the walls with a hose for well over 40 minutes. This brick is super porous. You know you are getting close to the brick having absorbed enough water when the brick feel cold and slightly dewy to the touch.
Lime-washing can be a simple process. It can also be labour intensive however if the lime-wash is to be burnished. Burnishing is done with a dry brush. You simply brush the lime-wash as it gets tacky on the wall. This fills in holes and cracks and gives a smoother overall appearance.
