Harbord Village: Complete Brick Restoration

The Brick Restoration project

We were presented with a remarkable opportunity to revive the Victorian charm of a corner lot in Harbord Village, all thanks to Euan from Renossance Inc. Our journey began in March when we carefully disassembled the entire brick structure of the house. Taking a meticulous approach, we salvaged and meticulously cleaned every viable brick, reserving them for the forthcoming reconstruction phase.

The process

The real challenge arose when we decided to exclusively use reclaimed bricks for the reconstruction of the front facade. This choice, while ambitious, brought about its own set of hurdles, particularly in dealing with the inherent variations in brick height, often fluctuating by as much as 5mm (1/4″). Undeterred, we embarked on a custom cutting process, meticulously shaping approximately 150 plinth bricks and squint bricks for the bay area. This bespoke approach allowed us to navigate the nuances of the reclaimed material, ensuring a harmonious and visually seamless result.

Our commitment to authenticity extended beyond the structural elements to the intricate details that defined the original aesthetic, such as the polychromatic arches and bands. Every effort was made to recreate these features with precision, paying homage to the historical character of the property.

Remarkably, this project marked a significant milestone for us – the first instance where we could proudly declare the use of 100% reclaimed brick in a facade rebuild. The end result is nothing short of breathtaking, as the facade now stands indistinguishable from its original counterpart. One of the most gratifying aspects of our work is when someone, observing the meticulously restored facade, inquires if we’ve simply repointed it. It is in these moments that we find validation for our dedication to preserving the authenticity and charm of Harbord Village’s architectural history.
